The question is arising in your mind, “how to create a headline/to write headline for your e-Portfolio”. The answer is very simple, there are four steps to write a headline. These four steps are given below.

·         Step-I              Choosing Job Title

·         Step-II             Selecting Appropriate Action Verb

·         Step-III           Deciding an Object of an Action Verb

·         Step-IV           Making Purpose of Action

Now, we will discuss these steps one by one in detail.

Step-I  Choosing Job title

Job title means the name of a skilled person in a specific profession. Many people might get confused to differentiate between job title and names of the field of study. Job titles usually end with the words, (-ian, -ant, -er, -ist; such as mathematician, consultant, engineer, biologist) whereas the names of the field of studies end with (-ing, -ics; such as engineering, mathematics). If a person is working in the field of mechanical engineering, he must be called as mechanical engineer. Similarly, if a person is working in the field of education, he must be called an educationist. Now, choose your job title.

Activity: Choose your job title

Example: Content Writer

Our first step is the job title, which has been done. For a list of job titles, please go to this helpful resource. The job titles are listed in alphabetical order. Visit the following URL.

Step-II Selecting Appropriate Action Verb

Select an appropriate action verb; the verb taking (-ing) in the end. Here is a list of action verbs, please choose appropriate one which suits your profession. Confused? Don’t be. Reading the following list, you will be able to find an action verb for your job title.

·         Creating: creating/producing/designing/building/developing/preparing

·         Fixing: maintaining/repairing

·         Managing: managing/supervising/overseeing

·         Teaching: teaching/educating/training

·         Researching: analyzing/examining and sometimes testing

·         Communicating: communicating/conveying/inspiring

·         Helping: serving/delivering

·         Recruiting (getting others to join you): recruiting/mobilizing

Activity: Choose an action verb.

Example: Creating

Now the two steps have been done and your headline should look like this, “Content Writer: Creating”.

Step-III Deciding an Object for the Selected Action Verb

An object for an action verb tells on what thing, object or person an action is being done. For example, if you are a content writer, ask yourself, “what do you do?”. Yes, you either writes research paper or create CV or design e-Portfolio. So, the research papers, CV or e-portfoilo will be the object.

Activity: decide an object for your selected action verb.

For Example: e-Portfolio

Now the headline should look like this, “Content Writer: Creating e-Portfolio”.

Step-IV Making Purpose for an Action Verb

This is the final step of making headline. A purpose of an action verb tells you what for which advantages or benefits an action is being done. If I ask a question to myself, “why do I create e-Portfolio?” My answer will be “to document most significant learning experiences in one digital space”. So, this answer is the purpose of my selected action verb “creating”. Remember, your statement should begin with “to”.

Activity: Make a purposive statement for your selected action verb.

For Example: To document most significant learning experiences in one digital space

Finally, the headline should look like this,

“Content Writer: Creating e-Portfolios to Document Most Significant Learning Experiences in One Digital Space”

This is the complete headline for your e-Portfolio.
